Research Interests
Until recently my research centered round hypertext.
I created a hypertext system, Guide, which introduced several novel features in terms
of how documents can be presented.
Guide won the British Computer Society award for technical innovation, and has been featured
in a Royal Society INTERLINKS exhibition.
It is now a commercial product on the PC, marketed by
InfoAccess of Bellvue, Washington, USA.
The UNIX version is available through the university.
I have now developed a strong research interest in context-aware mobile computer applications.
I have developed a technology called stick-e notes, which is designed to make
it easy for authors to create context-aware applications, e.g. a tourist application for a city
where information automatically popped up on the tourist's PDA screen as they moved
around the city.
We now have two outside grants to support this work, and a quite extensive research programme.
I have links with
Xerox European Research Laboratory in Cambridge (now at Grenoble),
and have worked there for two periods on sabbatical.
