Distinguished Lecture Series: Dick Wall

On 5th December 2008, we have out next lecture in the Distinguished Lecture Series. Dick Wall will be speaking on software development, Java, and technology in general.

Dick is a professional software engineer, currently working for Navigenics, previously at Google, and an alumni of the Computing Laboratory at the University of Kent. He is also one of the presenters of the popular Java Posse podcasts.

The Java Posse is not only one of the best Java technology podcasts, but one of the best technology podcasts in general. If you only subscribe to one podcast - make it this one!

The lecture is open to the public - everyone welcome.

BlueJ / Greenfoot Day 2009

The third BlueJ / Greenfoot Day will be held on 4 March 2009, in conjunction with SIGCSE 2009. The "day" is actually a half-day event on the afternoon of that day.

The BlueJ/Greenfoot Day is a half-day mini-conference for current and potential BlueJ and/or Greenfoot users. All users - experienced and beginners - should find interesting content at this event.

New Greenfoot version: 1.4.6

Greenfoot 1.4.6 has now been released. This release provides a number of bug fixes and adds translations of the interface into French, Italian and Greek.

BlueJ Version 2.5.0 released

We are pleased to announce the release of BlueJ Version 2.5.0. This release brings many improvements, including support for Java ME development, support for Subversion repositories for team work, much improved unit test recording and many bug fixes.

We are very please to announce the official opening of the Greenfoot Gallery. Scenarios can be exported directly from Greenfoot to the Gallery, where the rest of the world can then see them, learn from them, and comment.

Greenfoot and "Change Blindness"

Cay Horstmann describes using Greenfoot for an interesting psychological experiment: Investigating the phenomenon of "Change Blindness". As he writes: ... it shows that Greenfoot can do a lot more than have crabs eat sandworms :-)

Greenfoot Scenario, labs and worksheets

Qusay H. Mahmoud from the University of Guelph has published a Greenfoot scenario he uses for his teaching: Going to the Moon. His web page contains very detailed information, including an introduction, PowerPoint slides, labs and - of course - source code. Contact him for details.

Greenfoot and Media Computation

Cay Horstmann has started bringing examples from the "media computation" approach, pioneered by Mark Guzdial, to Greenfoot. This looks like a very interesting approach, slightly different in character from many of the game-like approaches we have seen before, so have a look at his description.

 Greenfoot Wins Duke's Choice Award

The Greenfoot project has won the prestigous Duke's Choice Award.

Greenfoot won the award in the category 'Java Technology in Education'. It was presented to the Greenfoot team at the award ceremony at JavaOne 2007 by James Gosling.

Greenfoot workshop at SIGCSE

On 7th March 2007, we will give a workshop at the SIGCSE 2007 conference, entitled

Programming With Greenfoot (Or: Introducing Java Via Games And Simulations)

This is a hands-on workshop that will cover many aspects of Greenfoot, starting with simple use, but spending most time on actual Greenfoot programming, including modification of existing scenarios and creation of new scenarios.
