This group has two related focuses: creating novel software tools and electronic publishing. These are brought together, for example, in the Guide hypertext system. Guide was a novel hypertext system developed at the Laboratory, which has since become a successful commercial product and, in partnership with OWL (Office Workstations Ltd.), has won the British Computer Society award for technical innovation.
The work of the group has moved from developing hypertext systems to exploring new applications: Eve Wilson has exploited hypertext for the display of legal documents and her work earned her an award from the Society for Computers and Law; and Judith Wusteman is investigating the use of distributed hypermedia for electronic journals.
Other major interests include indexing and retrieval techniques for multimedia documents in a distributed environment, techniques for the transformation and re-use of large collections of structured documents and the use of metadata for digital information.
Members of the Metadata Special Interest Group are interested in various aspects of metadata, including the Dublin Core, the Warwick Framework and the storage and retrieval of bibliographic, archaeological and multimedia data.
A recent focus of the group, which combines its expertise with the Networks and Distributed Systems Group, is novel applications of mobile computers. This involves work on human interfaces and on storage and retrieval.
