I am currently working on a project Sketching Schematics. This project brings together recent research in diagram recognition of hand drawn sketches on tablets and portable devices with novel research in schematic layout of public transport systems, particularly metro maps. The goal is to automatically translate hand drawn schematic diagrams into well rendered schematic diagrams. This work would first need to translate the drawn diagram into a graph, utilizing current research in recognizing graphs from sketches. The graph would then be converted into a schematic diagram, whilst retaining a close relationship with the essential features of the sketched diagram, by applying variations on current schematization techniques.
Applications for this work include schematics in standard areas such as public utility networks (gas, electric, water) and public transport networks (road, rail, metro) for field workers and others. In addition, there are less obvious uses for sketching of schematic layouts, in teaching, project planning and social network visualisation.
I have been working on a gesture-based schematic drawing application, SchemaSketch, which can be downloaded here.
