I'm interested in recognition memory, that is, I try to understand how we are able to distinguish what is old from what is new. Whilst recognition memory is a basic building block of many, more sophisticated types of learning and has been researched since the late 19th century, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In my PhD project, I combine behavioural and brain imaging data (event-related potentials) to assess different models of recognition memory, all of which are variations of a basic signal detection framework. My work is largely experimental, but I have dabbled in some 'proof-of-concept' neural network modeling and am currently getting to grips with Bayesian methods of model selection.
