PhD Project Summary
Research Interests
I am a member of the following research groups:
My research interests lie in the area of use of intelligent prediction techniques on mobile and ubiquitous devices to predict what a user might want given his or her contextual information.
The advent of mobile and ubiquitous computing technology in the past years has meant that more and more users now possess, and carry at all times, a device with a display, usable amounts of processing power and memory, and potential network connectivity. However, so far these mobile devices have been mostly used for phone calls, writing short messages and organizer functionalities, and not exploited to anywhere near their full potential. We intend to use these devices in their current incarnations to act as intelligent recommenders sensitive to user requirements.
In particular we propose a light-weight method for supporting the implementation of pervasive recommender systems on top of context-aware systems on current and common mobile devices. To achieve this, we propose a collaborative-filtering recommender system that does not explicitly model the user in terms of his or her preferences, yet still delivers results according to them. The system we use to demonstrate this upon is a restaurant guide, one which is ‘grown’ by its users, by relying upon them to be the suppliers of a comprehensive list of interesting restaurants and their experiences with them. ts.

When dealing with most automated context gathering apps, one has to reason
