PhD Project Summary
Modern organisations confront a turbulent environment that requires rapid, flexible response to changing conditions and they have to adapt to the changes in conditions. Deciding how to reform traditional organisations or guide the development of new entrepreneurial units is a complex challenge. A new model is evolving which includes a network of corporate units, independent organisations. The resulting new organisation forms are lean, flexible, adaptive, and responsive to user needs - virtual organisation.
Access control management mechanisms are used for controlling users' permissions in virtual organisations. How users get permissions, who is allowed to assign permissions to users or groups of users, what kind of permissions he can assign to users, what permissions users may have within an organisation, what kind of protected information and resources in an organisation can be accessed by users are the objectives of access control management mechanisms.
Delegation of authority is one of these mechanisms. Delegation of authority is a process whereby an authority A, authorises another authority B, by sharing a set of A's permissions, to act on A's behalf, possibly for a specific period of time.
Recognition of authority is another mechanism. It allows the authorisation policy in an organisation to be dynamically adjusted by dynamically trusted administrators. Consequently, virtual organisations or collaborations between organisations can be dynamically set up and removed. Users in a collaboration may have access rights to protected resources located throughout the organisations in the collaboration. In the mean time, unauthorised users are strongly forbidden from access the protected resources.
My project is to investigate and develop models for these management mechanisms used in the virtual organisation environment.

About me
I am currently doing my PhD under the supervision of Professor David Chadwick in the project Dynamic Virtual Organisations in e-Science Education (DyVOSE) sponsored by the UK JISC.
I stated my PhD in August 2004. Initially, I am a PhD student in IRIS at the University of Salford, UK. IRIS is one of the top research institute in Information Systems in the UK, with 5* rating in the RAE 2001, the highest possible in the last UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2001). I was transferred to the University of Kent, UK in March, 2005, following the relocation of the whole research group.
I am the main author of the Delegation of Authority in Virtual Organisations software in the Permis authorisation infrastructure. Currently, I am designing and implementing the Dynamic Authorisation Policy Management part of the Permis.
I received my first degree in Electronic Engineering from the Hanoi University of Technology in 1995 and my MSc in Electronic and Telecommunication from the Hanoi University of Technology in 1997. From 1997 to 2003, I am a lecturer in the Hanoi University of Technology. My main teaching subjects were Digital Communication and Data Communication.
The Hanoi University of Technology is one of the top universities in Vietnam and it located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.
