I was appointed Senior Lecturer in Computing at the University of Kent in 2002, and tasked with establishing and developing a sub-department of the School of Computing at Medway. In 2003, this sub-department launched its first degree programme, a BSc in Business Information Technology in collaboration with the Kent Business School with 12 students. In 2005 it was able to offer a full applied computing programme leading to a BSc in Information Technology. The number of applied computing undergraduates on this campus has now reached 220 with an annual recruitment of approximately 80. The number of academic staff based at Medway has similarly increased from 2 initially to 7 and it has become the base of the Future Computing Research Group. Over the next few years the computing research activity at Medway will be consolidated and it intends in conjunction with other Medway-based schools to offer postgraduate programmes in business computing that incorporate aspects of Cloud and Green Computing.

Background

I undertook my first degree in Mathematics and Management Applications at Brunel University. This was a thin-sandwich course that allowed me to gain experience working for a chartered accountant, and programming in the National Gas Turbine Establishment, Pyestock, the Ford Motor Company, Brentwood and the Shirley Institute or Textile Research Association, Manchester. Then, following teacher training and a research assistant's post at Manchester Polytechnic, I embarked on a career in further education, teaching mathematics. I continued to study part-time, reading Statistics and later Software Engineering at postgraduate level. My teaching became more computing oriented and eventually I became the Head of the Computing & Business (HE) Department at Mid-Kent College. Here I taught mainly HND programmes in computing and business, and a BSc in Software Engineering and was followed by my appointment to the School of Computing at Kent. I have been a GCSE Mathematics examiner (team leader) since 1987.

I enjoy reading immensely, particularly historical fiction. I can often be found scrutinising the shelves at Baggins Bookshop in Rochester looking for that elusive first edition to complete a series. At other times I am restoring a house in Lincolnshire, doing diy and gardening.
