Professor Frank Zhigang Wang, FBCS, SMIEEE, PhD, MSc, BSc
Prof. Frank Wang is Head of School, School of Computing
(formerly known as Computing Laboratory), University of Kent,
UK. In 1987 the Computing Laboratory Extension was formally opened
by Her Majesty the Queen. In 1998 the University of Kent becomes
the first European university to be recognised as an Authorised
Academic Java Campus, reflecting the University's position as a
'first-tier' university in Computer Science. Kent was placed 24th
out of 159 participating institutions in terms of the 4* (World
Leading) research according to the UK Government's 2008 Research
Assessment Exercise.
In 2004, Frank's appointment as Chair & Professor in Grid Computing
& e-Science was seen as crucial to the initiative of the CCHPCF
(Cambridge-Cranfield High Performance Computing Facility), which
is a collaborative research facility in the Universities of
Cambridge and Cranfield (with an investment size of 40 million
GBPs). As the founding Director, Professor Frank Wang and his
colleagues at Centre for Grid Computing have been developing a
Grid Computing platform. This platform can universally accelerate
Office/Database/Web/Media applications by a factor up to ten.
This work won an ACM/IEEE Super Computing Finalist Award in
2007. Positive comments have been received, including
"This is a
famous follow-on project :-)"--- Professor. Garth Gibson, Father
of NAS & NASD, Carnegie Mellon University,
"It is certainly first of its kind" -- an EC reviewer, and
"This proposed work has all the potentials of keeping the UK research
and development - world class." -an EPSRC reviewer.
A number of collaborations have been fostered with industrial giants,
including IBM, BBC, Microsoft, Xerox, CERN, Rolls Royce, HP and EADS.
Professor Frank Wang and his colleagues are also pioneering Grid
Computing education. In 2005, they launched a new MSc Programme
in Grid Computing that is the first in UK and the second in the
world. Two of their students have been recruited by Microsoft,
and another student, Mr. Christos Melissidis, won the Champion of
the Grid Computing Competition organized by British Computer Society
(BCS) in 2008.
Professor Wang's research interest includes Future Computing, Green
Computing (via memristor), Grid/Cloud Computing, Biologically-inspired
Computing, Quantum Computing/Communication, Data Storage & Data
Communication, and Data Mining and Data Warehousing, etc. His
publications include a book, 68 journal papers [13 IEEE Transactions
such as IEEE Transactions on Computers, 3 ACM publications such as
ACM Operating System Review, etc], 53 conference papers, and 4 book
chapters (Wiley/Elsevier/Cambridge/Springer, including Encyclopedia
of Computer Science and Engineering by Wiley).
Prof Wang was elected as the Chairman (UK & Republic of
Ireland Chapter) of the IEEE Computer Society in 2005. He is
Fellow of British Computer Society. He serves the High End
Computing Panel for Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the UK
Government EPSRC e-Science Panel. Frank has attracted a number of
EC/EPSRC/DTI/Industrial grants, totaling a few million euros. He
has been invited to present keynote speeches and other invited talks at
Princeton University (USA), Carnegie Mellon University (USA), Oxford
University (UK), Edinburgh University (UK), CERN (the European
Organization for Nuclear Research, Geneva), Hong Kong University
of Science & Technology (Hong Kong), Tsinghua University (Taiwan),
Jawaharlal Nehru University (India), Aristotle University (Greece),
Helsinki Technology University (Finland), Turkish Government The
Ministry of Industry and Commerce, University of Johannesburg
(South Africa), Central Philippine University (Philippine), and
Princess Sumaya University for Technology (Jordan), etc. Prof
Frank Wang is Co-Editor-in-Chief of Encyclopedia of Grid Computing
and Co-Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Grid and High
Performance Computing. In 1992 Frank was awarded Japanese Government
Scholarship (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology) for academic study at Research Institute of Electrical
Communication Technology, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan. In 1999
Frank obtained his PhD at University of Plymouth, UK. In 2001 Frank
won The Newly Appointed Lecturer Award from The Nuffield Foundation in
Science, Engineering and Mathematics. Prof Wang is CTO of SanjiTech
Software Co., LTD. (http://www.sanjitech.com). This company was
jointly established by one of his ex-students and himself in 2004.
