Development

All sorts of work involved here, though I specialise in Linux and clustering. but also deploy and develop new software systems like forums, CMS's etc ...

Manager UK Mirror service

Reponsible for the development of new systems to enhance the effective running of the service. Leading the UK mirror service technology strategy, overseeing both advancements and deployed technologies.

Other Interests

Java NFS

The java based NFS server myself and a few friends coded, with generic RPC client server layer, and portmapper.

Notify CD

Natty neat little Windows cdplay I hacked to add true random and multi disc support.

Risc OS

A little known OS Risc OS used in ARM based computers, and Top Set Boxes. Its Quick if basic but has the best U/I Filer driven desktop I have ever seen or used.

Helped port/write a VNC Client in C, A Xserver in C and assembler and have written a interrupt driven keyboard shortcut thingy in ARM assembler.

Linux

Extensive use both at work and home, including building a number of turn key solutions, for web access, firewalls, VPN's as well as desktop deployment, and file,print servers.

    Recommended

  • Debian Distribution, Not For the newbie, but higly suitable for longterm stable deployment, upgradeability and ease of maintanance with low (TCO) even if the initial install can be a trial sometimes.

Solaris And SunHardware

Testing, develompent and analysis of software (Opensource and some custom) and hardware configurations for software delivery(via rsync,http,ftp irc/im clients) with vaule added services (browsing of archives, iso images, etc,taring+gz-bz2/ziping directories). Sustainting software deliveray at rates of 1Gb/s, with sub second response times and maintaing 99.5% service availablility via coperative multisite operation. As well as developing and maintaing software suitable for mirroring hundreds of different sites via various known protocols and custom methods. (All software developed suitable for Linux as well)

In the past I have Administered the constellation of Sun servers here in the lab.

Food

Eating good food in good company and drinking fine wine and occasionally cooking it when I have the time. Would recommend both the Old Coach and Horses in Harbledown and Cafe Belege in Canterbury, St Dunstans. For a cheap chinese Super Noodles in Northgate and Cafe de China for an all you can stuff. Curry there's only one real option the Ancient Raj.

Mountaineering

I am an active member of the Kent Mountaineering Club.

Air Cadets

Me

Liverpudlian, exiled to Bournemouth, now having completed a degree at UKC Works there listening to Rock music and playing with shiny kit.
