The COMIT (Convergence of MHEG with Internet Technologies) project was funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council EPSRC) under its Multimedia and Networks Architectures program.

The COMIT project investigated models and mechanisms for the integration of the MHEG-5 component of the DAVIC specification for Digital TV with current WWW technologies, such as HTML and with emerging ones, such as XML, SMIL, etc. We developed and compared, by means of simulation, models of an integrated service; and investigated extensions to MHEG and to the various WWW systems by means of which the two may be interfaced.

The projects objectives were:

  1. To research and implement a model for integration of the digital television MHEG-5 standard with the current and emerging World Wide Web standards.
  2. To provide a set of tools to be used by content providers that will enable digital television users to access, present and interact with WWW documents.
  3. To contribute specific proposals, and to the discussion generally of, the appropriate standards bodies (e.g. ISO) and industrial consortia (e.g. DAVIC)
