Predicting the performance of a system before it is built is a highly desirable goal, but one that is rarely achieved. This paper examines performance problems and issues within industry, describes current practice and reports on a recent attempt to integrate performance analysis within the systems development process. It ends by outlining a set of requirements for performance prediction tools for the future.
