Computer security firms employ ethical hackers (so-called white-hats) who evaluate the security of a system by simulating an attack of a malicious hacker (a so-called black-hat). However, it is recognised within the industry, that even the most diligent white-hat cannot ensure that a system is immune to attack. The best that one can hope for is that a white-hat will discover a security flaw (vulnerability) before it is found and exploited by a black-hat. The aim of the fellowship is thus to devise computer-based tools that will accelerate the discovery of security flaws. These tools will automate the labour-intensive tasks that a white-hat has to undertake when searching for vulnerabilities.
