Applying for a Research Studentship

Application procedure

A research degree is supervised by a member of academic staff:
  • you can apply using our online admission form, including a research proposal that should state your research interests and we can then attempt to find a suitable member of academic staff to act as your supervisor
  • or you can contact a member of staff and develop a research proposal directly with them. You can find out more information about the research interests of members of staff and look at some suggested research projects at from the research information page. Once a research proposal has been agreed, you can then fill in the online admission form.

If you wish to apply for funding from the Computing laboratory, as well as a studentship application, you must also complete our request for funding form.

The application requirements:

  • a completed online admission form;
  • for bursary applications, a completed request for funding form;
  • the name and contact details of two referees. You must ask the referees to send their references directly to the University of Kent;
  • an original document providing confirmation of your degree. If the degree is not yet awarded send a transcript giving details of your marks to date;
  • for non native speakers, a certificate of competence in English (TOEFL or similar).

In addition to completing the above requirements, if you have a CV prepared, you can email it to computer-science@kent.ac.uk.

Deadlines

We will consider applications at any time for studentships that do not involve funding from the University of Kent.

Entry requirements

We require either a good first degree or a specialist taught MSc in Computer Science. We would also consider applicants from related disciplines such as Mathematics, Business Studies or Electronics who can demonstrate a strong interest in computing. A good degree from a British University is considered to be a 1st or 2:1, although 2:2 candidates can be considered under some circumstances. Applicants with relevant work experience may also be considered.
