The Computing Laboratory at the University of Kent demonstrated the breadth and excellence of the work of its research staff with the excellent results achieved in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. 65% of the Laboratory's research was judged as world leading or internationally excellent, with a further 30% judged as internationally recognised.
Comments from the panel included acknowledgement of the ‘ cumulative impact of the research, collaboration with industry, contribution to public understanding, academic collaboration and research degrees awarded. ’ Encompassed within this is recognition of the Computing Laboratory's work with schools and the Greenfoot project, sponsored by Sun Microsystems.
The panel also particularly noted that esteem indicators for individual members of the Laboratory's research staff also demonstrated a high level of engagement in international conference organisation, journal editing, invitations to deliver keynote talks and the award of prizes and fellowships. These awards demonstrate the vibrancy and dynamism of ongoing research within the Computing Laboratory which not only contributes to research worldwide, but also provides an excellent environment in which to train world class researchers of the future. Projects available for postgraduate study reflect this vibrancy.
