What is the FIRST LEGO® League?

Robot competition with spectators

FLL is an international program for children created in a partnership between FIRST and the LEGO Company. Each September, FLL announces the annual Challenge, which engages the teams in hands-on robotics design and authentic scientific research. After eight intense weeks, the FLL season culminates at high-energy, sports-like tournaments. See the FIRST LEGO League web-site and US FIRST's FLL page for more information.

FIRST is a not-for-profit organsation set up For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. It runs a variety of activities aimed at getting young people involved in and excited by science and technology. It is based in the US but supports activities world wide.

Who runs it?

Boys with robot

The University of Kent together with SETPOINT Kent & Medway. We have been running regional finals for several years. We find that they are very popular with schools and that most schools return year after year. We are supported by the Kent Branch of the British Computer Society.

Regional finals can be run by a variety of organisations that want to help young people to develop an interest in problem solving and team working. Among these are universities, businesses and members of STEMNET. We expect that there will be about 20 regional finals in the UK this year, spread all over the country.

In the United Kingdom, the competition has been running since 2001. The competition started in the USA in 1998. It is organised there by FIRST in partnership with the LEGO® company.

Who can take part?

LEGO cups

In Europe the competition in Europe is open to teams of young people between the ages of 9 and 16. They need to be made up of between seven and ten young people and they need an adult "team coach" to organise and guide them. They are also advised to work with two adult mentors for help and advice. The mentors might be parents or people from local businesses.

Teams can be from schools, youth groups or local communities.
