Introduction to Java Programming with Greenfoot

Teacher Workshop: Tuesday 9th June 2009

Note revised date

Greenfoot workshop:pupils from Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls

For many computing professionals, programming is the aspect of their work that excites them most. Programming is a creative, intellectually challenging, and highly rewarding activity. When teaching programming to school aged children, we have consistently observed the same: they get highly excited about the subject, become creative and express immense satisfaction as a result.

Professor Michael Kölling is experienced at introducing programming to beginners, both staff and students. His clarity and his enthusiasm, have made him a popular and successful presenter.

In this hands-on workshop we will introduce programming in the language Java, using the Greenfoot environment that Michael has specially designed for teaching programming to children. We will demonstrate techniques that help teachers to present programming in an engaging and accessible way. This will enable students to work with graphics and games in the Java Programming Language easily and quickly. The suggested activities may be used in the classroom or for extra-curricular activities, such as stretching activities or after-school clubs.

Participants: teachers and technicians interested in starting with Java programming. No previous experience is required.
Cost: free. The University will provide lunch and coffee.
