Direct Entry to the 2nd Year

We welcome applications from suitably qualified students for direct entry to the second year of any of our programmes. Your prior experience and education must broadly cover the topics in our Stage 1 modules; you take a special bridging course to cover any unfamiliar material.

Innovative teaching with research-led courses

Our courses come from a research environment of international excellence. Staff feed ideas from their leading-edge research into courses right through the curriculum. For instance, one of the School's research groups focuses on Natural Computation, which uses biological systems - including the human immune system and the behaviour of ant colonies - as an inspiration for writing new sorts of computer programs. This world-leading research is offered to students in a number of courses in the final year.

Laura Fletcher (Computer Science with a Year in Industry) says:

" Whereas the other courses I looked at seemed to lock you into a rigid programme, at Kent you were allowed to explore different areas: from web development to operating systems to programming languages. "

We also use innovative teaching methods and tools in our teaching: for example, our introduction to programming is based on the Java language and the BlueJ learning tool, which is developed in the School itself. The key text book on BlueJ and Java is authored by two of our staff.
