Quality learning environment

Kent offers a wealth of expertise in the teaching of programming languages and in particular, the object-oriented language Java.

Our teaching achievements are widely recognised

Our teaching was rated Excellent in the most recent assessment. The Guardian Newspaper league table put Kent joint 3rd for teaching quality in the UK.

We teamed up with Deakin University in Australia and developed two leading Object-Oriented teaching environments for learning the Java Programming language: BlueJ and Greenfoot. BlueJ is aimed at university level learners and has proved very popular with our students. Greenfoot is aimed at school children and it recently won the Dukes Award for innovative projects using the Java platform.

Our academics have written a widely used text book which supports teaching Java with BlueJ: Objects First with Java. This is now in its 5th edition and has been translated into several languages.

Our teaching support and computing facilities are impressive

We provide excellent support for you throughout your stay at Kent. This includes access to web-based information systems, podcasts, web forums and anonymous questions as well as study skills services and our Value Light programme for students who benefit from extra help in the early stages.

We use state-of-the-art teaching methodologies, including BlueJ and LEGO® Mindstorms for teaching Java programming. Students can also work as subject ambassadors in local schools by choosing the Computing in the Classroom option.

Our study bedrooms have connections to the campus network and our campus-wide WiFi gives you the freedom to study outside of computer rooms.

Laura Fletcher (Computer Science with a Year in Industry) says:

" The thing I most appreciated about being at Kent is the large amount of support. You have a personal tutor and they regularly get in touch with you to make sure that everything’s OK. The library is well stocked; there are a lot of student groups, with support from staff as well. "
