Secure Services

Introduction

This document describes how to set up Microsoft Outlook Express to use SSL encryption when receiving (and possibly when sending) mail. This ensures your password is much more secure as it travels over the Internet and other insecure networks.

Installing our SSL certificate

For this to work without any warning messages you'll need to install our SSL certificate.

Setting up Outlook Express

The instructions below apply to both POP3 and IMAP.

It is important that you enter the full hostname for the mail server you are using in the account settings. Choose the correct one from this list :-

  • raptor = raptor.ukc.ac.uk
  • myrtle = csmail.ukc.ac.uk
  • swallow = swallow.ukc.ac.uk

To activate the SSL encryption, follow the steps below. Load Outlook Express as you normally would.

  • Select Accounts from the Tools menu in Outlook Express.
  • Select the account for your UKC mail and click Properties.
  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Tick "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" below Incoming mail.
  • Ensure the port number is 995 for POP3, or 993 for IMAP. The default should be correct.
  • If you are sending mail to the same CS machine you can encrypt outgoing mail too. (This will not work from off-site. On-site only.)
  • Tick "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" below Outgoing mail.
  • The port number should stay at 25.
  • Click OK.
  • Close the accounts window.
