The CS UNIX machines export parts of their filestore as a Windows share called simply `files'.
So, for example, to access the files on raptor, map the share
\\raptor\filesand to access files on the CS research workstations, map
\\csresws\files
If you are trying to mount filestore from the SBS/VPN/Eduroam then you must fully qualify the name
\\raptor.kent.ac.uk\files
Information on mapping this filestore under Linux and Mac OS X can be found here.
Below \\host\files you will find most or all of the following folders:
| home | Your home folder on this machine. Usual disk quota is 200MB. | |
| proj | Folders for project work. | |
| courses | Files to support course work; placed there by teaching staff. | |
| packages | Software. | |
| xlogin | Files used by the Windows X server eXceed to allow you to log into this machine. If you have a Windows box with eXceed installed but without the standard UKC desktop (for example, a machine in your study bedroom), then double click on one of the files below here to log into this machine. |
When you create a file or folder via the `files' share, it inherits its permissions from the containing folder. In simple terms this means that (for example) files created below group-writable areas (such as group areas below \\host\files\proj) are themselves group-writable.
This is usually what you want. In the cases where that's not what you want, use right-mouse-button->Properties->Security on the file or folder and change the permissions there.
