Changes to the School of Computing X Window System

This page gives information on how the X Window System is set up on School of Computing Unix teaching hosts such as raptor and swallow.

Logging in from a Public PC

To log in to raptor, swallow, or myrtle from a Windows PC, you must use eXceed as follows:

Start->Programs->Departmental Software->Computer Science->CS Unix Hosts

After a short pause you will be presented with a Host prompt:

Type the name of the host (for example: raptor) to the Host prompt and either click on Login, or simply press return.

You will then be presented with a second window:

into which you type first your login and then your password. And then you're on!

If you wish to change your UKC Classic Desktop settings, or even change to a completely different X environment such as CDE, then information on how to do so can be found here.

Logging in from a SSB PC

To connect from a study bedroom PC you first need to install Exceed. You can find the latest version at \\ad.kent.ac.uk\dfs\Install\exceed10 (run setup.exe).

Once installed browser to \\raptor\files (or swallow/myrtle), open the "xlogin" folder and run the "chooser.ses" file. You should then get the login screen as given above.

If you have a firewall you need to ensure that ports 177/udp and 6000/tcp are open to connections from raptor (or swallow/myrtle).

Logging in from a Linux/BSD machine

You should be able to login with something like this:

X :1 -query raptor.kent.ac.uk

Also ensure your firewall allows connections to ports 177/udp and 6001/tcp.
