Entry requirements for taught postgraduate courses

There are three main factors: academic qualification, mathematical skills and English language.

Academic qualification

This depends on whether you are applying for a standard Masters, International Master or Pre-Masters course.

Standard Masters

The minimum entry requirement is a good second class Honours degree in an appropriate subject. This means a 1, 2.1 or a respectable 2.2 from a UK university or an equivalent qualification from an overseas institution. Appropriate subjects depend on the particular course, see the individual MSc course pages for precise details.

Applicants whose degree qualification falls short of the above requirement but who have relevant work experience will also be considered and are encouraged to apply. Alternatively, you may wish to consider our Pre-Masters or International Masters courses.

International Masters and Pre-Masters

The minimum entry requirement is a good Ordinary degree in an appropriate subject. This typically means a Bachelors degree from an overseas institution that does not award the equivalent of UK Honours degrees. Appropriate subjects depend on the particular course, see the individual MSc/GDip course pages for precise details.

Mathematics

If your undergraduate degree is not in a numerate subject then you will need to have mathematical skills equivalent to a grade C or above in GCSE/O-level Mathematics.

English

The University requires all non-native speakers of English to produce evidence of proficiency in written and spoken English. Except where the entry requirements for a particular course stipulate otherwise, we require a minimum score of:

  • International English Language Test (IELTS) : 6.5 with at least 6.0 in reading and writing
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • paper-based : 600 including 4.0 in writing
    • computer-based : 250 including 4.0 in writing
    • Internet-based : 90 including 20 in writing and 20 in reading
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English : B
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English : A

If you do not reach this standard you can attend a pre-sessional English course to boost your skills.
