- Abstract syntax trees.
- Regular expressions and finite state machines.
- Context-free grammars, parsing techniques, lexical analyser and parser generators.
- Interpretation vs. compilation.
- Abstract stack machines, run time organisation.
- Contextual analysis, especially type checking.
- Code generation.
