CO874 Networks and Network Security (15 credits)
Syllabus
- Introduction, including a review of network techniques, switching and
multiplexing systems.
- High speed local area networks.
- Network protocols, including data link, MAC, network, transport and
application layers.
- Real time data transmission and quality of service.
- Naming and addressing, including material on the domain name system,
dynamic IP address allocation, address translation systems and LDAP.
- Network services.
- Queuing theory.
- A study of cryptographic algorithms including symmetric and asymmetric
techniques and the distinction between encryption and signatures.
- Recent developments. Topic will change from year to year and will be
addressed principally by research seminars and student centred research.
