PL583 Philosophy of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence (30 credits)

Syllabus

Upon completion of this module students will have mastered in detail, and at an advanced level of scholarship and rigour, the major claims and arguments in the philosophy of cognitive science, in particular:

  • the arguments for and against the existence of mental representation
  • the status of commonsense psychology
  • arguments for the existence of non-conscious thoughts
  • the causal role of the mental
  • the computational theory of mind
  • the language of thought hypothesis
  • classical versus connectionist architectures
  • the embodied mind hypothesis
  • the possibility of machine intelligence

This module is delivered by the Philosophy department.
