Algebraic effect handlers are a methodology for dealing with effectful programs in a modular way. They build on the free monad for a functor as means of describing a syntax tree. An interpretation of syntax is provided by a handler, which folds over the structure with an algebra. Handlers themselves are not always algebraic operations, which can lead to surprising properties of programs written in this style. This talk presents scoped algebraic effect handlers, which allow a certain class of handlers to be expressed algebraically.
