As I've thought about this more, I've become less surprised. It's a very different sort of metaphor from a "language" or "approach" (which are dynamic, process-oriented, and generative) or even a "collection" (some stuff that fits together somehow).

It's a metaphor of centralisation, reference and authority: all of which ideas were explicitly part of the Yahoo! initiative.
