bsp (Build Staff Portal)

creates an internal personalised Portal webpage for you.

You can republish the web page from your web browser by selecting the page link from the Re-publish [page | help] options located near the bottom right hand corner of the web page. Alternatively, you can republish the web page from the departmental research machine running UNIX (currently Myrtle) using the build script described below.

This portal provides a useful gateway to the web to assist you in your daily work. It consists of a core set of links to popular areas within the Computer Science Website, the University Website and beyond. It also contains a set of links specific to you, including

It is strongly recommended that you set your browser homepage to be your Staff Portal webpage. If you are not sure how to do this, please contact cs-webmaster for help.

Note:
Your staff portal webpage has been designed to be useful to you. It was not designed to provide useful information about you to other people. and cannot be navigated to from another webpage.
To publish information about you, for example, to publicise your research interests, you should continue to use your 'business page' (bp).

Usage

On a research work machine, typically MYRTLE, simply type

bsp

The file ~/webpages/portal.local is built. The file ~/webpages/portal.mylinks which defines the links to be displayed in the My Own Links section is incorporated into the portal webpage. .

My Own Links

You can tailor the My Own Links section of the Staff Portal to display links of your own choosing.

When your Staff Portal webpage is built for the very first time, a default portal.mylinks file is copied to your personal webpages directory as

~/webpages/portal.mylinks
This copy initially contains a set of links which are thought to be useful to you. Every time bsp is run and the Staff Portal is rebuilt the set of links contained in this file appear in the My Own Links section of the Staff Portal.

You can edit this file and add more links of your choosing or delete links which you no longer require. A link can be specified using the following html format:

<li><a href="http://www.cs.ukc.ac.uk/page.html">newlink</a></li>
To make these changes appear on your webpage you will need to rebuild your staff portal webpage by running bsp.
