There are many tools available to assist in the creation of automated tests. We have listed a few below and where possible provided a guide on how to use them.
In order to improve departmental support for automated testing and to pass on best practice, please can you let cs-webmaster know
The use of automated tests can improve the student learning experience and help them to engage more with our courses.
Students are able to do self testing (no marks awarded), which enables them to gain a perception of how well they are understanding the material being taught. Students may typically resit the test as often as they like. This can encourage further study and act as a confidence builder.
More formal testing is achieved by the course tutor setting marked tests which are then graded. These would typically be performed during a timetabled class at the university to ensure that the correct person actually takes the test .
The major effort for the tutor is in creating a question database. Once this is done, the tutor can develop and tailor tests to suit the course material and student ability level. The tutor has control over administering the tests and can easily analyse the results. The tutor also determines (among many other things): type and amount of feedback to provide; whether or not to release results to students automatically; when to release results; whether or not to override scores.
