It is estimated that there will be two-billion mobile hand-held devices in use within the next five years or so. Compare this with the mere 200-million PCs currently in service. This sounds like another revolution in the offing.

In the '70s researchers at PARC conducted careful studies of office workers and invented now-familiar technologies to support them. More recently, researchers in the Cambridge Lab have been looking at the work of mobile professionals with a view to developing technologies to support them too. Surprise, surprise! Mobile workers have different needs, and the solutions developed for office work are often inappropriate. I'll describe some of these differences and one of the solutions we developed in response - called Satchel.

Xerox recently created a new division, Xerox Mobile Solutions who just announced a new product based upon Satchel technology, while in research, we are expanding our team to explore the next big thing in mobile computing.
