Abstract for Seminar

This presentation is a retrospective review of Computer Networks over nearly four decades. It is biased by my experiences of working in the field. It will cover developments leading to computer networks, early experimental networks and the modestly named Universe project, a collaboration between universities and industry that built a high-speed (2 Mbit/s) network connecting sites using satellite communication. I'll then discuss issues affecting the integration of real-time and non real-time services on networks and the convergence of telecommunications and computer systems and summarise work on my pet topic of multicasting. Finally, I'll look briefly at ongoing challenges in networking e.g. increased capability, security and ubiquity.
