From origins in high performance computing and virtual organisations to the vision of the Service Oriented Knowledge Utility, the Grid vision is evolving. Meanwhile several years of experience in the e-Science programme is giving us a set of requirements for the infrastructure for our research, and has generated a set of advanced tools and components. In this talk we will look at the evolution of Grid and e-infrastructure, and discuss how this may evolve over the coming years. This will include some reflections on what we learned through some of the e-Science projects and an overview of the work of the Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute UK.
