eScience has done much to advance the use of computational and data-driven techniques across many scientific disciplines. In these, challenges of security often remain unsolved, or deferred until later. However, in many scientific disciplines, the models, data and methods have significant commercial value, and scientists in these sectors are often unwilling to exploit the full potential of distributed computing because there remains a trust gap between the scientist's requirements and present technological capabilities. This is a barrier to the take-up of e-Science technologies in significant sectors such as bioinformatics, drug discovery and finance.

In this talk, we set out some facets of the challenge, and an approach to addressing them. This work is being pursued as part of a year-long themed programme of events supported by the eScience Institute. We will also describe how to participate further in the theme's events.
