Welcome

This course portfolio describes how introductory programming is taught at the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham.

The aim of the portfolio is to explore the approach and challenges of teaching programming to students from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Some of the students are straight from school, others are mature and are preparing for a career change or might be studying part-time. Some of the students have years of programming experience and others have never written a program before and have little idea what to expect. The portfolio explores the influences of the lecturers and describes different aspects of the course, highlighting decisions that are seen as important by the lecturer.

The portfolio has been divided into six parts. The context describes the setting for the course - the students, the physical surroundings and any constraints on teaching and learning decisions. The content descibes what is actually taught. The instructional design explains the way that it is taught. The delivery describes the mechanics of how the material is delivered. The assessment section describes the role of assessment. Evaluation describes the reaction of the students and the lecturers.
