All staff are encouraged to publish on the Computer Science web site, CSWeb. However, you can only publish web pages if you are registered with the CSWeb database.
Web pages must conform to the house style and you should always use the relevant build script to achieve this. Be aware that web pages can have 2 versions: one visible to all users outside and inside the University of Kent; one visible only to users inside the University of Kent (e.g. staff, students).
CSWeb is arranged into a number of main areas reflecting the various interests of the department such as teaching, research and people. Each of these areas has its own particular type of web page which is suited to that particular area of interest. You should be familiar with the most commonly published types of web page .
The Computer Science department has its own database which is used to store information about research, teaching and people. Information from this database is used in many of our web pages.
Soon after your arrival in the Computing Laboratory your details are entered into the CSWeb database by the Computer Science Webmaster. These details consists of your title, initials, forename, surname, telephone extension, room number, status (academic, administrator, research student etc.) and position (lecturer, industrial placements officer, etc.). Your staff portal and business card web pages, which incorporate this data, are then published and you are notified by email when this is complete. If any of these details change during your stay in the laboratory, please instruct cs-webmaster to update them in the CSWeb database. You can then rebuild your web pages accordingly.
CSWeb contains a number of different types of web page , each type tailored for a specific purpose. To publish one of these types of web page you must always use the appropriate build script. The build script incorporates data (either from the user's file store or the CSWeb database) into the appropriate template, applies the house style, and publishes the resulting web page. These templates are held centrally and users are not able to access them. However, staff are able to publish general web pages by defining their own template.
There is a list of all build scripts available with instructions on how to use each of them.
The web pages most commonly published by staff are listed below. All staff have a staff portal and business card web page and staff need to be able to update both of these pages. Academic staff also need to be able to include teaching related information in course module areas and to update research group web pages. Research students may also be required to publish in the research group area. If you want to publish outside of these areas you will have to ask cs-webmaster to set up a directory for you.
The staff portal web page is a good starting place for locating information of interest to members of the Computer Science department and it is recommended that you make this page your browser homepage. It contains links to teaching, research and administrative information for the department, the faculty and the university. It also contains information specific to you, such as the courses you lecture on, the classes you supervise, your tutees, your research group and your publications index. This page will be automatically provided for you when you join the department.
You must use the bsp build script to update this web page. [Examples: staff portal web page for Keith Hanna; List of staff portals]
Each member of the Computer Science department has their own business card web page. For academic staff and research students, this web page is the main showcase web page where details of their research interests and publications are listed. (Additional teaching information is also included, but it is better to use the staff portal for this.) Administrative staff use this web page to describe their responsibilities within the department. This page will be automatically provided for you when you join the department.
You must use the bp build script to update this web page. [Examples: business card web page for Keith Hanna; List of staff ]
Each course module has its own designated area on the web site. This area consists of a set of standard web pages listing details such as convener, lecturers, classes, and assessments. Academic staff may include additional general web pages giving information such as lecture slides, course notes, assessments etc.. If you are involved in teaching you should know how to publish in the course module areas in which you teach.
You must use the bmp build script to publish this web page. [Examples: course module web page for module CO300; List of modules]
Each research group has its own designated area on the web site. If you are academic staff and a member of a research group you will be able to publish top-level research group web pages as well as general research group web pages. Research students are not generally able to publish top level web pages and will need to ask the research group Webkeeper to provide a directory where they can publish research material. Please notify cs-webmaster when you become a member of a research group so that the CSWeb database can be updated and the research group membership web page can be updated to include your name.
You must use the Rbrgp build script to publish the top-level research group web pages and Rbargp to build any other research group web page.[Examples: research group web page for the Theoretical Computer Science ; List of research groups]
There are areas on CSWeb which do not require you to use a specially formatted web page. However, all such pages must incorporate the house style. In these areas you must use the bap build script to publish the web page. This enables you to provide and design the content of the web page and bap to just apply the house style to it.
