Systems Biology is an important and highly demanding area of inter-disciplinary science. The seminar will discuss how Systems Biology relates to Integrative Physiology. It will consider the differences between BioInformatics and Systems Biology and discuss how inter-disciplinary collaboration is essential if we are to gain maximal benefit from the large amounts of data that have accumulated over the past 30 years of 'molecular revolution' in the Life Sciences. The way in which a DTI funded Beacon Project to build an in silico liver is tackling these major challenegs will be used to illustrate the difficulties and benefits of combining the expertise of life scientists, mathematicians, engineers and computer sciences.
