The Questions

The Answers

To start...

  1. Who can make their own web page?

Any member of staff or research postgraduate in the Computing Laboratory.
Pages are created for taught postgraduates and undergraduates, but no tailoring of those pages is possible.

Building my web pages

  1. How can I change my "staff portal" page?

Use bp (stands for build staff portal).
A personalised staff portal webpage is provided for every member of the Computer Science department.

  2. How can I make my "business card" page?

Use bp (stands for build page).

  3. How can I change the content of my "business card" page?

You can create or edit your include files.

  4. How can I make my publications page?

Use bipi (stands for build individual's publication index).

  5. How can I change which of my publications are listed in my publications page?

There are two ways to do this:

    • bipi can optionally take a start date and/or an end date and will list all publications between those dates, unless any matching publications have had their "individual index status" changed using chin (see next point).

    • chin can be used to change the "individual index status" of a publication. For example, seminal papers can be made to always appear in a publication index, no matter what the date range passed to bipi is. See the chin manual page for more details.

  6. Can I add other pages and/or directories to my ~/webpages directory?

Yes. Just make sure the files and/or directories have their permissions set correctly so, the web server can access them. (See CSWeb Architecture for more details on setting file and directory permissions.)

Building my research groups' web pages

  1. How can I make my research groups' "homepage"?

Use Rbrgp (stands for Research:build research group page).
Academic staff are able to rebuild research group webpages. Postgraduate students are not, unless they have been assigned the role of Web Keeper by the group.

  2. How can I change the content of my research groups' "front" page?

You can create or edit your research group's include files.

  3. How can I make my research groups' publications page?

Use Rbrgpi (stands for build research group's publication index).

  4. How can I change which publications are listed in my research groups' publications page?

There are two ways to do this:

    • Rbrgpi can optionally take a start date and/or an end date and will list all publications between those dates, unless any matching publications have had their "research group index status" changed using chrg (see next point).

    • chrg can be used to change the "research group index status" of a publication. For example, seminal papers can be made to always appear in a publication index, no matter what the date range passed to Rbrgpi is. See the chrg manual page for more details.

  5. Can I add other pages and/or directories to my research group's directory?

Yes. Just make sure the files and/or directories have their permissions set correctly so, the web server can access them. (See CSWeb architecture for more details on setting file and directory permissions.)

Adding/updating my publications

  1. How do I add a publication to the database?

Use the submission forms. If you've never submitted a publication before, we recommend you read this help file.

  2. I've got all the details of my publications as Bibtex records in a .bib file: is there a quick and easy way to get this information into the publications database?

Yes. Email the .bib file to the Publications Officer, and they will convert it with legpub.

  3. How do I edit/update an existing publication? (E.g. correct/add abstract/content etc.)

Email the Publications Officer with details of the changes you'd like to make.

Tour building

  1. What is a tour?

A tour is a selection of existing pages on the CSWeb site, strung together to make a guided tour. For example, a tour for prospective undergraduates may include pages from a selection of course pages and Course Handbook pages on the CSWeb site.

  2. How can I build a tour?

The pages should already exist on the CSWeb site, and a tour framework can be written containing the URLs of the pages to be part of the tour, alongside any annotations for those pages.

A CGI script overlays the appropriate annotation and navigation buttons on each page listed in the tour framework file.

btp is then used to create a front page for the tour, listing the titles of all the tour's destination pages.

    Full documentation is available.

Miscellaneous

  1. How do I create a page using the house style?

Use bap (stands for build any page).

  2. Do I have access to a cgi-bin?

Not by default. Email the CSWeb webmaster and they will make the necessary arrangements.

  3. How can I help people to find my page?

There are a number of ways in which you can increase the number of visits to your web pages listed on the Help users to find your webpages page.

Trouble shooting

  1. I've made a web page and now I'm trying to access it: why do I get the following error message: "You don't have permission to access /foo.html on this server"?

Either the permissions on the file are incorrect or the permissions on the directory containing the file are incorrect. (See CSWeb architecture for more details on setting file and directory permissions.)

  2. Who should I contact if I have a problem?

Email the CSWeb webmaster with as many details of the problem as possible.
