Professor Simon Thompson, Emeritus Professor of Logic and Computation, will deliver a keynote with Franceso Cesarini (CTO and founder of Erlang Solutions) on Industry versus academia? Learning and teaching programming at Lambda Days 2021 on Tuesday 16 February 2021.

Lambda Days 2021 is part of the 22nd Symposium on Trends in Functional Programming (TFP) and Trends in Functional Programming in Education (TFPiE).

In their talk, Professor Simon Thompson and Francesco Cesarini will explore this hypothesis: in industry, you are learning a technology you will use to develop software, whereas in an academic setting, you are there to learn how to learn. Based on their experience of travelling in opposite directions: Francesco from industry to academia, and Simon from a theoretical to a more pragmatic approach, they will test the hypothesis, and, through evidence and anecdotes, show that in fact it is more complicated and diverse than we had first imagined.
