My approach

  • Lectures - these are quite short but are used to get over the key points for a particular topic such as an exploration of memory and learning. These include short inputs from the students such as memory tests, or short deliberation and discussion points.
  • Lab session - whilst tutorials and practice are keys when learning how to use a new piece of software, students also use this time to explore concepts, consider other people's research and update their personal portfolio of ideas.
  • Activities - a series of activities are introduced throughout the module. These could be quite short and completed during the weekly sessions, or longer and completed over 2 - 3 weeks. For instance, an analysis of the use of colour could be completed during the session, but 'reading speed' tests would be conducted in private time over several weeks.

I try to foster a professional attitude in my dealings with students. I encourage them to present their work to a standard expected in a working as well as an academic environment. Areas such as report and essay writing, examination technique and referencing conventions are all visited again and again. Team work, exchange of ideas and knowledge and respect for peer opinions is also encouraged. However, for some students, respect for the views of others does not seem to be a popular choice.

Effective communication is a thread running through all facets of my working life. It may be 'good to talk' but only as long as it is of appropriate quality, timely, accurate ... and all the other accepted criteria for good information.

Within my subject area I feel I have a duty of care and responsibility to ensure students understand key concepts. The methods employed to this end are varied and hopefully stimulating. 'Death by PowerPoint' is a popular saying with us. Whilst I do use PowerPoint, I try to vary the media used. PowerPoint to me is just a vehicle for headings, an aid memoir for myself, points for discussion, or reference to pertinent resources.
